19/05/2021

In the build-up to this summer’s internationally renowned Alternative Economic and Monetary Systems (AEMS) summer university – the final in a series of ‘Expert Talks’ takes to the stage, next week.

‘Let’s Talk Future’ – Visions of a world after the social-ecological transformation’ will see leading lights share their expertise on ecological, social and financial solutions in the post COVID-19 world, at the free online seminar on Thursday, May 27.

Speakers Lino Zeddies, author of “Utopia 2048”, and Veronika Winter, chairperson of Fridays For Future Austria, will explore new ways of taking action on the climate crisis and alternative economic and financial solutions.

CEO of Austria’s OeAD student housing, Günther Jedliczka said: “In a time of economic turmoil created by Covid-19, visionary ideas to transform economic policy and the well-being of the planet have never been more important.

“This free online seminar is the third in our series as we gear up to a thought-provoking and lively Alternative Economic and Monetary Systems (AEMS) summer university from July 19 to August 6.”

Now in its eighth year, the AEMS programme offers an immersive online experience for undergraduate and post graduate students, as well as people with interests and careers in politics, philosophy, economics and finance.

The programme, which includes climate expert Helga Kromp-Kolb and the founder of the Economy for the Common Good Christian Felber, looks at climate change from an environmental and economic perspective and focuses on the many possible solutions for these global problems. Solutions for the financial crisis triggered by Covid-19 are also considered.

Günther Jedliczka added: “AEMS opens up discussion and debate around the alternatives for a new world order in economic thinking, through a mix of workshops, debates and social activities.

“The programme challenges the norm and puts fresh ideas and perspectives under the radar.

“At the heart of its content is the debate on how economic, political and monetary factors can be changed to be more sustainable, without overusing our natural resources.”

OeAD student housing – part of Austria’s national agency for international mobility and cooperation in education, science and research – operates AEMS under a not-for-profit arrangement.
