HOUSEHOLDERS planning a spring clean over the long Easter weekend are being urged to clear surplus paint from sheds, garages and cupboards as part of a nationwide recycling scheme.

Kick Out The Can offers customers the chance to return surplus paint to any of the UK’s 115 Crown Decorating Centres between March 30 and April 11 and as a reward, they will receive a 20 per cent discount voucher.

The scheme will see donated paint re-processed by social enterprise company, Nimtech, before distribution to community projects in partnership with regeneration charity Newground. Leftover plastic and metal paint containers will also be recycled.

Mark Lloyd, Sustainability Manager for Crown Decorating Centres, said: “The Easter break is an opportunity many people take to have a bit of a clear out and we hope this year people will get on board with our recycling scheme.

“Customers can bring up to 10 containers on each visit during the Kick Out The Can fortnight, and as statistics tell us there are around 54 million litres of unused paints being stored across the country, we’re hoping to see plenty of paint brought into store.

“The returned paint is sent to our headquarters for re-processing by social enterprise Nimtech. Then the paint will be distributed to community projects and charitable groups nationwide by regeneration charity Newground.

“Last year we helped transform communal gardens, park benches and youth centres as well as providing paint for a social housing apprenticeship scheme.

“We’d like to support more of these schemes this year – which is why we’re asking all our customers to Kick Out The Can and return their surplus paint to their local Crown Decorating Centre.

“Kick Out The Can is a perfect fit with our company-wide sustainability ethos, and to reward our customers for choosing to recycle their paint, we’re offering a 20 per cent discount voucher.”

The initiative will allow customers to recycle unwanted paints and woodcare products from March 30 to April 11 in return for a 20 per cent discount voucher which can be used until July 31, 2015.
